Greenland paddle Nanook

EastPole Paddles

Nanook is in shape and size a traditional West-Greenland kayak paddle.

The paddle has a smoothly and gracefully flowing shape from the shaft to the tip of the blades.

Nanook is made of Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), a material that is light and does not rot.

Pine is built into the handle to increase strength. The paddle is impregnated with special oil so that it does not “drink” water. The natural material is warm to the touch, smooth and very beautiful.

Anyone who hasn’t paddled with a Greenland paddle doesn’t know how easy it is to maneuver the kayak and how much easier rolling is because you can extend the lever and the material itself has great buoyancy.

Yes, the technique is slightly different. Also, by using a Greenland paddle, you are more gentle on the tendons and muscles and put less effort into each stroke.

The optimal length of the paddle is determined by measuring the distance from the ground to your bent fingers, as if holding the paddle, on your outstretched over the head arm.

If the paddle you choose is longer, that’s OK. This type of paddle is a low angle paddle but paddling with a high angle is also possible.  The color of the paddle can vary from light red to dark brown because each wood has a different density and color. The true color of the paddle appears only after oiling. The photos are indicative in this regard.
