Nortik Navigator is an innovative single kayak with a wooden frame that has set new standards in this market segment. Unlike most regular folding boats with a wooden frame, the Navigator fits in just one bag, weighs only 22 kg, and has a very unique design.
In the development of this lightweight single kayak with a wooden frame (white ash and birch plywood), the goal was to be a kayak for everyday use by kayakers with ambition. To be fast, firm and solid, so that every paddler from beginner to expert feels at ease. Based on these considerations, the ribs are designed to take the shape of a rigid kayak: a V-shape that is slightly rounded. The V-shape allows for high primary stability, while the rounded shape also provides excellent secondary stability. This particular design is due to the placement of air tubes on both sides. They “hug” the structure and give a rounded shape of the hull.
A second functional effect of this constructive form: only the keel exerts direct pressure on the skin. And this part of the skin is specially reinforced and protected from abrasion by a very strong keel tape. All other parts of the skin are kept at a distance from the frame thanks to air pipes. Hence the buffer effect: on these parts, the skin cannot be easily damaged – unlike traditional constructions – because it can always give in a little.
A mixture of the long-proven PVC-polyurethane has been chosen as the material of the clothing. PU remains quite flexible at low temperatures (better than PVC), and the UV-resistant material is more resistant to abrasion than full PVC.
Reducing the size of the package to one bag requires complex techniques for the assembly mechanism. And the solution consists in making a (patented) hinge that allows the boards to slide into each other when the kayak is folded.
The weight has also been optimized based on bionic characteristics and a predefined load. To be clear: nature has been used as a model in many aspects.
The construction of the kayak is very strong, and it is assembled and disassembled quickly. All hinges are made of anti-corrosion stainless steel.
